LEWISTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
Patron Code of Conduct
The Board of Trustees of the Lewiston Public Library, under Section 262 of the New York State Education Law, has adopted rules of conduct to ensure the library is used in accordance with our mission to meet the informational, educational and recreational needs of our patrons.
Loss of library privileges and/or expulsion from the library, on a permanent or temporary basis, may result from violations of this policy.
Unacceptable Behaviors/Activities
1. Drinking alcohol or using drugs on the library premises.
2. Being under the influence of drugs or alcohol resulting in disruptive behavior.
3. Eating, drinking, smoking or vaping on library premises. (There may be refreshments served in the meeting room or children’s room during an organized program.)
4. Verbal harassment, physical molestation or assault of patrons or staff.
5. Destruction or theft of library property or personal property of staff or patrons.
6. Misuse of public restrooms.
7. Improper attire; shirts and shoes must be worn.
8. Offensive personal hygiene.
9. Sleeping.
10. Solicitation.
11. Cell phone use only permitted in ways that others will not be disrupted.
12. Exceeding the acceptable noise level.
13. Bringing animals, other than service animals, into the library except for designated library programming.
14. Possession of weapons.
15. Engaging unwilling patrons or staff in religious or political discussion.
16. Engaging in any behavior that a reasonable person would find to be disruptive, harassing or threatening in nature to library patrons or staff including stalking, prolonged staring at or following another with the intent to annoy or intentionally behaving in a matter that could reasonably be expected to annoy or disturb other patrons.
17. Offensive sexual behavior such as exhibitionism, peeping and child molestation.
18. Abusive, obscene or threatening language or gestures.
19. Disruptive behavior such as running in the building, throwing objects, etc.
20. Using the library for the purpose of selling or collecting funds.
